SPRINGVALE — A fire engine was hit from behind when responding to a crash Wednesday morning and has been taken out of service.
Sanford Fire Chief Steve Benotti said the 2005 engine was responding to a multi-vehicle crash near the intersection of Pleasant Street and Railroad Avenue in Springvale when the fire truck was hit by another motorist.
He said there were no injuries in the original crash and none in the crash involving the fire truck.
The first crash was thought to have taken place due to sun glare and icy roads.
Benotti said a car windshield that wasn’t fully cleared of ice is thought to have played a role in the crash involving the fire truck.
He estimated damage to Engine 3 at about $35,000.
