Isaiah 60:1
Returning Light
The winter solstice is upon us. For a few days planet earth will be in a holding pattern, maintaining the status quo before it takes a bow, clicks in an extra minute of daylight, and begins its journey southward. Even though it marks the beginning of winter, we can at least say good bye to the ever shortening days and celebrate the gradual return of the light. For Christians it is the beginning of a new liturgical year. It is about rebirth, not of the flesh, but of the spirit. It is celebrated as the time when God sent is son into the world to light the way so God’s gifts could be delivered, the gifts of love, mercy, truth and forgiveness. The birth of Jesus is about light coming into a dark world, It is God’s gift to us, God’s way of showing us how much he loves us by taking on human flesh to live among us and teach us how to love and care for one another. May the Christ child who came into the world to bring light and love to all be born anew in our hearts and give us peace, not just at Christmas but all the days of our lives.
