HARPSWELL SELECTMEN, town officials and Reed & Reed employees gathered at the Mitchell Field Pier for a “pierbreaking” ceremony on Thursday. Reed & Reed was selected as the contractor for the demolition and removal of the former Navy pier in November. The pier has deteriorated over time, with various parts falling into the ocean in recent years. The more parts that fall in the ocean, the more expensive removal of the pier would become, so town residents opted to proactively remove the pier during a vote at the annual Town Meeting in March. Reed & Reed was awarded a $3 million contract to demolish the pier. The pier will be taken apart and brought onshore at Mitchell Field, where it will then be processed and removed. A schedule submitted by the company proposes to begin preparations in December and January, with work to commence in January. The project is expected to be complete in September, absent delays.
