BIDDEFORD — Looking for a good deal on fleece pajamas, winter gloves or  infrared stove heaters? They can all be found at one discount retail store that plans to open at new location in Biddeford early next year.

Ocean State Job Lot, which has six locations in Maine, has purchased the former Shaw’s supermarket property on Route 111.

The property at 510 Alfred St. sold on Oct. 24, said the realtor handling the sale. The sale price for the 8.45 acre site, with a 55,900-square-foot building, was $3.925 million, said Drew Sigfridson with The Boulos Company, a real estate company based in Portland. This is down from the original listed asking price of $4.595 million and less than the assessed valued on the combined building and land —  the 2017 assessed value is $5.362 million, according to the city of Biddeford website.

The building was built in 1997, according to The Boulos Company brochure on the property. The building was built to house a Shaw’s grocery store. That store closed in 2015 and has been vacant since. According to Sigfridson, the property was not owned by Shaw’s parent Company, AB Acquisition LLC, but by a finance company. The city lists the former owner as JPMCC 2006-LDP6 10 Alfred Street, LLC, based in Wilmington, Delaware.

The location is serviced with natural gas and has city water and sewer.

It is located in Biddeford’s Route 111 commercial corridor, with other large retailers nearby including Home Depot, Kohl’s and Biddeford Crossing, which includes Market Basket supermarket, Target among others, and a number of other stores, restaurants and other businesses.

Biddeford’s new Economic & Community Development Director Mathew Eddy said he is pleased that OSJL would soon be opening locally.

“It’s a great stores, it’s more than the dollar store but it offers the public real discounts,” said Eddy who started his job on Nov. 27. “There’s one up in Sanford and it does well.”

“It’s a tremendous use of that space,” he said.

The first Ocean State Job Lot opened in 1977 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, according to the company website.

“The idea was to sell brand name, first quality products at closeout prices,” the website states.

The family-owned company is the Northeast’s largest, privately held, closeout retail chain, according to the website, with about 4,000 employees, more than $600 million in annual sales and 129 stores throughout the Northeast. The six Maine stores are located in Sanford, Bangor, Belfast, Falmouth, Oxford and Rockland.

Representatives for Ocean State Job Lot could not be reached prior to the news deadline.
