Greason nabs hockey award

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College senior Maureen Greason has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Week.

Greason scored three goals in the Polar Bears’ win and tie against Colby.

On Friday night, Greason scored a pair of power-play goals, including the game-winner with 4:46 remaining, to lift Bowdoin to a 3-2 win.

On Saturday, she scored the game-tying goal on the power play with 6:38 left to salvage a 3-3 tie.

Through 78 career games, the senior forward has scored 20 points, including 14 goals.

The Polar Bears will return to action Dec. 1 when they host UMass Boston at Watson Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Kelly earns hoops honor

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin junior Abby Kelly has been named NESCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and New England Women’s Basketball Association Player of the Week in honors announced on Monday.

Kelly was the Skidmore Invitational MVP after averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals in a pair of wins.

Kelly was particularly outstanding on Saturday, scoring a career-high 27 points with eight boards and four assists in a victory over third-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.).

For the weekend, Kelly connected on 57 percent from the field, including 42 percent from 3-point range.

The Polar Bears open their home slate tonight against the University of New England, with tip slated for 5:30 p.m.

The Bowdoin men follow against UNE at 7:30 p.m.

Swimmer of Week goes to Lowery

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin sophomore Marshall Lowery has been named the NESCAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week.

At an extremely competitive meet hosted by MIT last weekend, Marshall won a pair of events. She claimed the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.45 and took the 200 backstroke in 2:09.19.

Lowery is already the school record holder in both events (56.33, 2:02.03), both established as a first-year last winter. The performance helped the Polar Bears to a split at the meet, defeating WPI and falling to MIT.

Lowery and the Polar Bears will return to action on Dec. 1 as they host the Maine State Meet at Greason Pool beginning at 6 p.m.

Squash teams in opening action

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College men’s squash team split its opening matches of the season last weekend, falling to Bates, 9- 0, but defeating Connecticut College, 8-1.

The Polar Bears (1-1) are ranked 27th in the nation in the latest College Squash Association poll.

The Polar Bears battled well against the 16th-ranked Bobcats, but failed to muster a win. Tyler Shonrock and Uday Khanna forcing fourth sets in their losses.

Bowdoin dominated the Camels on Sunday, sweeping the top five positions. Ian Squiers (3-0), Satya Butler (3- 1), George Cooley (3-0), Gannon Leech (3-1) and Tyler Shonrock (3-1) claimed victories at the top of the ladder. The Polar Bears also got wins at positions 6-9 from Drew Clark (3-0), Arjun Dravid (3-0) and Max Wiegand (3-1), respectively.

Bowdoin is scheduled to play a pair of matches against Hobart and Hamilton on Dec. 2 in Clinton, N.Y.

The Bowdoin women also split over the weekend, falling to Bates, 7-2, and slipping past Conn. College, 5-4. The Polar Bears (1-1) are ranked 24th in the latest College Squash Association national poll.

Despite the setback to 15th-ranked Bates, Bowdoin was able to win a pair of matches. Zoe Wood and Mariela Mendoza both earned 3-0 sweeps at positions five and six for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin got contributions across the board in knocking off 28th-ranked Connecticut College on Sunday. Wood (3-1) and Mendoza (3-0) again battled for wins at five and six. Tully Ross (3-0) and Alexa Horwitz (3-0) earned points for Bowdoin at No. 2 and 3. Lindsey Bindra clinched the win with a 3-0 victory at the No. 1 spot to give Bowdoin the victory.

The women also head to Clinton, N.Y. on Dec. 2.
