
The church is once again hosting “My Big Fat Greek Bazaar,” an annual event that benefits the church’s St. Fotini Ladies Society.
The bazaar will take place at 186 Bradley St. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 18. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The lunch menu will include spanakopita, spinach and feta cheese layers in filo dough; pastitsio, a Greek lasagna; roasted Greek-style chicken and Gyros, a sandwich on pita bread made with spiced meat strips, tomatoes, onion and tsatziki sauce.
There will be a large assortment of authentic Greek pastries available and other sweet treats.
The delicious cuisine doesn’t just magically appear every year. A lot of work goes into the production of the food, and a team of dedicated women spend hours at the church, using tried and true recipes passed down through generations.
The women of St. Demetrios have the production of items down to a science, and had an assembly line formed in the church recently as they assembled countless trays of baklava, a popular Greek pastry made with layers of filo dough, chopped nuts and honey.
The ladies chatted as they worked.
“I’m the non-Greek one,” said Patti Jordan. she said a friend invited her to help out three years ago, and she’s been coming back every year to work with what she calls a group of “wonderful people.”
“We’ve adopted her,” said Angie Genzabella.
“I love it,” said Jordan. “We have a good time, right girls?”
“We do,” chimed in the rest of the ladies.
