EAST WATERBORO — The U.S. Postal Service is looking for new quarters in East Waterboro and is hoping to hear from area folks who have  property that might be available.

”We’re looking at leasing space — retail or a business office and if we can’t find standing (space) will look at a modular,” said U.S. Postal Service Real Estate Specialist Kurtis Bullard. If it turns out a modular building is the answer, the postal service would enter into a ground lease with the property owner. Bullard said the postal service may even consider a dwelling that could be converted for postal use.

The building on Route 202 that had housed the East Waterboro post office for many years was sold earlier this year. The new owner plans to turn the building into an Asian restaurant.

East Waterboro residents have been using post offices in Waterboro  and North Waterboro since the East Waterboro location closed July 28.

Bullard, in a telephone interview Monday, said he hopes to receive comment about possible locations both before a scheduled appearance at the Nov. 14 Waterboro Selectmen’s meeting and afterward. As well, the postal service will receive written comment for 30 days after the meeting, Bullard said.

“We have no locations in mind,” he said. “We’ll see what comes in from our comment period and see our best options”

Town Administrator Gary Lamb said the postal service will be welcome at the meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

“They’ll explain the process and explain their desire  to reopen,” he said.
