BRUNSWICK — Second-seeded Brunswick got off to a fast start in a 6-0 win against No. 7 Lewiston in a Class A North girls’ soccer tournament quarterfinal Tuesday afternoon at Gardner Field.

Maeve Arthur scored three goals and had an assist as the Dragons (14-1) beat the Devils (3-8-4) for the third time this season to move into the regional semifinals for the second consecutive season.

Brunswick will host Bangor at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Emily Larochelle opened the scoring 57 seconds into the game when her crossing pass from the right corner sailed over the head of goalie Gemma Landry into the far corner. Lea Scrapchansky was there to put on the finishing touch, but the ball was already over the goal line.

“It was supposed to be a cross,” Larochelle said, “but somehow the wind must have took it and it went in.”

“When they scored, it was like we were going to start the game down 1-0,” Lewiston Coach Brant Remington said. “They just put together a string of passes and a beautiful chip and (the goal was) right there. It was a good start for them, not for us.”

Less than six minutes later, Arthur made it 2-0 when she turned Sara Scrapchansky’s feed from the right side into her first goal. Scrapchansky, the younger of the two sisters, sent a cross from the right corner into the goalie box and Arthur used her body to deflect it past Landry.

“We started the game perfectly,” Brunswick Coach Martin Davison said. “We came and got an early goal, and the second one came real quick and the game was over.”

With about five minutes left in the first half, Arthur made it 3-0 when her corner kick from the left side deflected in off a defender as it curled toward the goal.

This season, the Dragons’ best defense has been its potent offense. They have outscored opponents, 60-11.

“We’ve been playing forward because we have four attackers,” Davison said. “It’s a bit of a gamble, but it has been working. We have to attack. It’s our strength.”

Five minutes into the second half, Arthur scored her third goal by lining a left-footed shot into the far corner after dribbling the ball just inside the left side of the box.

Anna Kousky scored on breakaways during the 52nd and 59th minutes, with the first one set up by Arthur’s long outlet pass.

“What I like today was Anna and Maeve were linking well, and that’s the way to get behind the defense,” Davison said.

Goalie Beth Labbe, who played all but the final 12 minutes, made one save for her 10th shutout of the season.

Brunswick held a 26-2 edge in shots, and Landry, a freshman, did her best to keep the Devils in the game. She made 12 saves, most of them of the sensational variety.
