The Tigers opened the game by blocking a Kennebunk punt in the opening drive, then getting a score soon after on a Carter Edgerton rush to jump ahead 7-0. Kennebunk would score on the ensuing possession when quarterback Tripp Bush connected with Derek Smith for a score, but Edgerton would score from 28 yards out to give Biddeford the 14-7 lead after the one quarter.
The Rams would take over in the second, holding Biddeford to just 32 yards versus their 128, and would score twice on another pass to Smith as well as a rush from Cam Lovejoy to take the 21-14 lead at half.
“I think (we) settled down more than anything. They came out and I think they had a great gameplan, it took us awhile to adjust. It wasn’t a big surprise, it was just a case of settling down and executing,” said Kennebunk head coach Joe Rafferty.
Kennebunk continued to roll in the third quarter, and got a 64-yard touchdown rush by Smith to extend the lead to 27-14 after a missed PAT. Tripp Bush provided another big play for the Rams in the fourth, scoring on a 44-yard rush and breaking multiple tackles along the way to push the score to 35-14.
“That’s a very good team, we knew what we had to do and sometimes we did and sometimes we didn’t,” said Biddeford head coach Brian Curit. “We gave up two home runs and that’s something we knew we couldn’t do this week.”
Although the game was out of reach, Biddeford would score in the final minute on Edgerton’s third rushing score of the day.
Smith led Kennebunk with 166 yards of total offense, including 117 on the ground. Dante DeLorenzo led the Rams with 125 rushing yards, while Bush added 52 with 100 yards passing.
Edgerton led Biddeford with over 100 yards on the ground.
Curit was disappointed in his team’s offensive production in the second half.
“There’s not much to say, we scored 21 on a very good football team but we also gave up 35. In the second half I didn’t think we did a very good job on the offensive side of the ball, that was pretty evident,” said Curit.
On the other hand, Rafferty was pleased with the skill players’ performance on his offense.
“They did some great things tonight — those guys are tough in space when we can get them in it. We found our openings, used a little bit of our pass game to help us, Tripp’s legs helped us a lot tonight,” said Rafferty.
Rafferty was happy to see the Rams rebound after last week’s disappointing loss, and earn homefield advantage to open the playoffs.
“That was huge for us, we had to do it,” said Rafferty. “You know how its been (at Waterhouse Field) historically, it’s a hostile place to play and its a great place to play at the same time. You’re always going to get their best, I was just happy to settle in and get it done.”
Kennebunk finishes the regular season at 7-1, claiming the second seed in the Class B South and will host Gorham next week. Biddeford finishes the season at 5-3, getting the fifth seed and will travel to Greely in the first round.
