Joe Donahue, Commander Post 20 Brunswick has been called to National Headquarters of The American Legion in Indianapolis Indiana, to attend the annual National fall conference. Cmdr. Donahue has been appointed to the National Americanism Commission. Briefing and updates on Americanism programs, Boy State, American Legion Baseball, High School Oratorical Scholarship, Jr. Sports Shooting, Amateur Radio, Youth Law Enforcement, School Medal Awards Program and many other Programs and topics were discussed.

Veterans Alert

Veterans Homes in Maine have received the American Health Care association/National center for assisted livings Prestigious Quality care Silver Award for outstanding quality care.

War-time veterans who served here or overseas: Even if you have Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance you may be eligible for added in-patient rehabilitating and nursing care funds at the Maine Veterans Home. A $51.38 per day stipend to use for health care or personal expenses while at the MVH. Up to $1,220 per month for cost of care if you qualify for a VA pension, plus free health care equipment such as wheel chairs, walkers, and prostheses. Amount adjusted annually. Contact: Kathy Chase, R.N at Maine’s Veteran’s Home 1-888-684- 4664. She will tell you if you are eligible for added benefits. There are no complicated forms or papers to fill out and you will speak with a real person-not a machine.

School Medial Awards

A program to help instill patriotism, civic responsibilities, courage and leadership is offered to grades 6-8 at St. John’s and Brunswick Junior High schools. Students write a 250-word or less essay. The Theme “Why I Like America.” Judging will take place in March. Presentations will be held at each school. Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be presented: 1st, $150, savings certificate; 2nd, and 3rd places will each receive a $75 savings certificate, legion Medals and certificates will be presented. Funding for this Program is provided by frank Goodwin of Goodwin Chevrolet.

Youth Programs

American Legion Junior Sports Shooting program is up and running member Dave Watson is working with local youth to prepare them for competition shooting at higher levels. Dave is also working up the American Legion Youth Cadet Law enforcement program. Dan Lindsley District 8 Cmdr. And member of Post 20 has applied for and received a License for Amateur Radio operation. Dan will put together a program for our youth, and local Scouts to join. More on this program as we progress.

Post 20, Brunswick Legion will provide Halloween Safety brochures to the local schools.

Bike Safety

American Post 20 will be meeting with town committee to discuss and plan for the bike and pedestrian safety program
