Joy in Music
A sign at the entrance of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris calls for silence inside the sanctuary. But once inside I could hear the chanting of a male choir coming from another part of the building. It was so exquisite that even now, so many years later, the memory of it lingers on. What would life be like without music? It is woven into the very fabric of our being. We tend to identify with others of our own age by the music of our era. A certain song may transport us to a place in our past where life was tender and sweet. Music can lift us out of our inner selves and give us a glimpse of heaven, while some can be so rhythmically compelling that we cannot resist the urge to dance. What music will accompany us through the heavenly gates? Will a male choir be chanting, or will the angels be singing our favorite song? Will we float through to the strains of Handel or Brahms, or will some of us just dance our way through? Could it be that God recognizes us by the music that is in us, and if so, what better way to be welcomed into the presence of the Almighty!
