A standoff that began at a mobile home on Lower Barley Road at mid-afternoon and continued for several hours concluded about 9:30 p.m. on Monday when a man was found dead inside his home by members of the Maine State Police tactical team.

The standoff began around 2 p.m. after several shots were fired from inside the house. The man’s wife fled the home without injury and the tactical team was called to the scene, said Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

“The man found dead is 59-year old Wayne Castellez, who likely died of a self inflicted gunshot wound,” McCausland said in a brief statement issued just before 10:30 p.m.

Emergency medical responders from Lebanon Fire & EMS were called to the scene just before 2 p.m. for a report of an emotionally disturbed male, according to a statement from the agency.

A few minutes later, at 2:03 p.m., firefighters were called to the same residence when a smoke detector began sounding inside the home.

In a statement, Lebanon Fire & EMS said dozens of Maine State Police troopers and members of the Maine State Police Tactical Team — some from as far away as Caribou and Machias — converged on Lower Barley Road, which is located is off Route 202, near the New Hampshire state line
