BANGOR (AP) — A Maine conservationist who played a key role in creating the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is running for Congress.
Lucas St. Clair on Monday became the sixth Democrat to enter the race against Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin in the 2nd Congressional District.
The 39-year-old St. Clair, the son of Burt’s Bees co-founder Roxanne Quimby, advocated for the national monument created by then- President Barack Obama last year. Support for the project grew after he took over his mother’s efforts to transfer the land to public ownership.
Poliquin’s political adviser sarcastically referred to St. Clair’s political aspirations as his “latest life quest.” St. Clair is currently registered to vote in Portland, but his campaign said he’s closing on a house in Hampden this month.
