The Holy Angels
Today marks the feast of Saint Michael and all the Angels. The Archangel Michael is the greatest of all the angels. He defeated Lucifer in the war in Heaven, and is considered to be the heavenly leader in the fight against all the enemies of God. Of the many angels mentioned in the Bible, only four are called by name, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel. All end with “el”, which means “of God.” Angels are messengers from God. They span the gap between the perfection of God, and the imperfection of people here on earth. No mortal may look directly on the face of God and live, but God does occasionally appear in power taking on the guise of an angel. Christians, for the most part, have always felt themselves to be attended by helpful spirits who enlighten us. Most of us have had at least one occasion where we have been visited a “Guardian Angel”. The case for guardian angels cannot be proved or disapproved, but if your own faith experience determines this to be a reality for you, it is probably true. God cares for us and watches over us, so why not through his messengers, the Holy Angels?
