WINDHAM — The second annual Amazing Chase is in the books, and organizers at the Sebago Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce are happy with the results.
“Our 2nd Annual Amazing Chase was an overwhelming success. Teams had a fun filled day and couldn’t say enough about their experience tackling challenges all around the region,” said Chamber Executive Director Aimee Senatore.
The “team tech adventure race ” is based in part on the CBS show “The Amazing Race.” The Sebago version of the competition had teams of four traveling around the Lakes Region with an iPad and specialized app, completing various tasks and trying to rack up the most points.
This year’s winning team was the Banking Believers from Gorham Savings Bank, who took home the “explore and play package” that includes a 30-minute helicopter ride for four courtesy of Windham Weaponry, a kayak excursion from Sebago Trails Paddling Co., tickets to the 2018 Maine Blues Festival in Naples, dining at Bucks Naked BBQ and massages at Freedom Massage and Wellness.
Katherine Damon, a vice president at Gorham Savings Bank and one of the team captains for the Amazing Chase, said that her group was surprised to find out that they’d won.
“We were so busy strategizing the best routes, conquering challenges, convincing strangers to join in our fun, and building our team to new heights, that we lost track of the points we had scored,” Damon said in an email. “Yet, before the final results were revealed, we had already decided the whole team would compete again next year.”
The Gorham Savings Bank team also won the competition’s “best costume” category by dressing up like bees. Damon said that she and her team members all cover the Lakes Region for the bank and two of them live in the area.
“We truly felt like a force for good – zooming around town dressed like giant bees put a smile on people’s faces, and hopefully brought some buzz to all that Feed the Need does for our local community,” Damon said.
“The secret to our win? Simply that we believed in each other,” Damon added.
Last year’s winners, the Sloth Ninjas, came in second with the Headlight Audio Visual team finishing third.
The Amazing Chase also serves as a fundraiser for the Chamber.
Though Senatore declined to say how much money the event raised for the organization, she did say that the teams combined to raise $2,000 through crowdfunding for the Chamber’s “Feed the Need” initiative that works to combat hunger in the region.
