GIRL SCOUT TROOP 2022 was recently honored by Topsham Public Library Director Susan M. Preece in a special reception to celebrate the Scouts’ work on the Hidden Meaning of Flowers garden. Troup 2022, based in Topsham, are Claire Caton, Gracelynn Dauphinais, Sophie Gonzalez, Megan Hughes, Anya Kowalsky, Avery Myrick, Sophie Powell and Lorelei Whalen. They are led by Jennifer Hughes and Mandy Russell. Over the summer, the troop created and established the garden to work toward their Junior Girl Scouts Bronze Award. All materials were donated: Cosmic Stone donated the mulch, Home Depot donated the stepping stones and the families of the troop donated the flowers and plants. The garden refers to “Floriography,” the language of flowers that ascribes meaning to plants and flowers. It was used in the Victorian era to send coded messages to loved ones. Some of the flowers and plants included in our garden are hostas that represent “mystery,” astilbes that mean “love at first sight,” bee balm that denotes “family,” and irises that symbolize “valor.” From left: Scout leader, Mandy Russell, Sophie Powell, Scout Leader, Jennifer Hughes, Megan Hughes, Library Director, Susan M. Preece, Gracelynn Dauphinais and Lorelei Whalen.
