YORK COUNTY — A new form of support for addicts and families dealing with addiction is right around the corner, as law enforcement and health officials’ work to bring Learning to Cope meetings to York County.
Learning to Cope is an organization dedicated to providing support to families of drug users. Their meetings typically take place throughout Massachusetts — where the organization is based — however Kennebunk Police Chief Robert MacKenzie spoke with staff at Learning to Cope about potentially bringing meetings to southern Maine on occasion, and talks are reportedly going well.
MacKenzie said he, the Learning to Cope staff, Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition of University of New England and Southern Maine Health Care are working to have a community forum in the coming weeks to discuss Learning to Cope.
“All will be welcomed, including families of loved once that are using, those in long-term recovery, those interested in becoming facilitators, law enforcement, medical personnel, and anyone else that has an interest,” MacKenzie said in an email.
He added that he believes meetings will follow soon after.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
