SKOWHEGAN

Chad Kirk’s Mt. Ararat High School coaching career began with a win on Friday as his Eagle girls downed Skowhegan, 4-1, in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference play.

“It was nice to see us score and really put the ball in the net,” said Kirk, whose Eagles (1-0) host Edward Little this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m.

Riley Leech scored the game’s first two goals to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

A penalty kick allowed Skowhegan (0-1) to get on the board as Alyssa Everett scored.

But, Alexa Gurney tallied off a corner kick from Leech 15 minutes into the second half, and Leech completed her hat trick 12 minutes later to finish off the scoring.

Emma Hawks added an assist for Mt. Ararat, while netminder Zoe Stilphen had 13 saves.

For Skowhegan, goaltender Amber May had 12 stops.

CAPE ELIZABETH 0

FREEPORT 1

Cationa Gould’s goal was the only score as the host Falcons stunned the Capers in a Western Maine Conference opener at Hunter Road Fields on Friday.

According to Freeport (1- 0) coach Elayna Girardin, whose squad visits Greely on Thursday at 6 p.m., this is her team’s first win all-time against Cape Elizabeth (0-1).

Gould scored with 25 minutes left in the first half, and goaltender Carly Intraversato made it stand up with 14 saves.

Capers netminder Lilia Membrino had seven stops in the loss.

BRUNSWICK 9

MT. BLUE 1

The visiting Dragons cruised to a KVAC win at Farmington on Friday.

Sara and Lea Scrapchansky each tallied a pair of goals for Brunswick (1-0), with single scores coming from Isabella Banks, Maeve Arthur, Emma Banks and Anna Kousky. Sara Scrapchansky dished out three assists, while Kousky added two helpers. Emma and Isabella Banks, Marley Groat and Emily Larochelle had an assist each.

Brunswick, which hosts Edward Little today at 3:30 p.m., outshot the Cougars (0- 1), 24-5.

Mt. Blue goaltender Lexi Mittelstadt had 14 stops, while Dragons netminder Beth Labbe turned away four.

“I thought Mt. Blue was excellent in the first 15 minutes, but once we settled we passed and moved very well and created many opportunities,” said Brunswick coach Martyn Davison.

The Jenniffer Perron era began at Lisbon as the Greyhounds dropped a Mountain Valley Conference matchup with the Raiders on Friday.

Sydney Douglass scored the lone goal for Lisbon (0-1) off a flip throw.

Julia Noel tallied two goals for Oak Hill (1-0), with Rylea Mae Swan adding a goal.

The Raiders outshot the Greyhounds, 17-14.

Lisbon hosts Spruce Mountain today at 4 p.m.

Grace Webber netted three goals to power the host Wolverines to a win in season opening MVC play on Friday at Wiscasset.

Gwen Webber chipped in two goals in the Wiscasset (1- 0) win, while Lily Souza dished out an assist.

The Wolverines head to Boothbay today at 4 p.m.

MEDOMAK VALLEY 1

The Shipbuilders opened their KVAC season with a victory at Waldoboro on Friday.

It took nearly 20 minutes for Morse (1-0) to acclimate to the blustery conditions. During that time the Panthers (0-1) made it difficult to penetrate toward their goal.

Morse took control of the neutral zone and settled into its game. Ella Martin’s cross found the foot of Emily Martin, who pushed the ball under the Panther keeper with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.

The Shipbuilders took advantage of the wind in the second half, keeping the pressure on Medomak Valley with a several near misses. The second goal for the visitors came as a Sierra Wallace corner was met by Dory Kulis and Martin, who collectively pushed the ball into the back of the net with less than 18 minutes on the clock.

Medomak scored its lone goal on a late penalty kick.

Marissa Parks had seven saves in the cage for Morse, which hosts Lincoln Academy tonight at 7 p.m.

Field hockey

RUMFORD — Rylee Sevigny scored the game-winner with 5:41 remaining in the second overtime to lift Mountain Valley to a 1-0 MVC win over Lisbon on Friday.

The Greyhounds dropped to 0-2 and visits Oak Hill this upcoming Friday at 4 p.m. The Falcons improved to 1-1.

Avery Sevigny set up the winning tally, as Mountain Valley outshot Lisbon, 24-5.

Lisbon goaltender Mikaylia Harnden had 23 saves in the loss.

RICHMOND — Nate Kendrick tallied a pair of goals to help lift the Bobcats to a 4-0 win over Rangeley in an East-West Conference tilt Saturday.

Zach Small stopped both shots he faced in net for the shutout. Hunter Lowell made 12 saves for Rangeley.

Andrew Vachon and Matt Rines also netted goals for Richmond (1-0). Vachon, Dan Stewart, Nick Adams and Justin Vachon each added an assist.

Richmond hosts North Yarmouth Academy today at 4 p.m.

The visiting Cougars dealt the Dragons a tough opening loss in KVAC play in Brunswick on Saturday.

Brunswick got on the board first by forcing an own goal five minutes in.

The visitors responded 15 minutes later with an unassisted goal from senior Alden Thompson Voight. Mt. Blue (1-0) put two more in during the first half with a goal from Dominic Giampietro along with a Brunswick (0-1) own goal.

The Dragons pulled within one 13 minutes into the second half with a beautiful finish by Everett Horch.

Mt. Blue answered 10 minutes later to push the lead back to two with a breakaway goal by Samuel Smith.

The home side pulled to within one with 10 minutes left in the match when Kian Murray knocked in a rebound.

Brunswick continued to press, but was unable to tie it up before time expired.

Mt. Blue keeper Hunter Bolduc finished with eight saves, while Jared Hummer had six in the Brunswick cage.

The Dragons visit Edward Little today at 3:30 p.m.

MTN. VALLEY 11

WISCASSET 0

The host Wolverines played with just 11 players and were missing five starters in an MVC loss to Mountain Valley (1-0) on Friday.

Espen Lumburg led the Falcons with four goals, with Mortez Wehrem adding a pair of tallies. Jacob Sinclair, Cameron Gallant, Dalton Noyes, Seth Peasley and Vinnie Deroche chipped in a goal each.

Sam Strozier had 21 saves in the Wiscasset cage. Solid play came from Wolverines Matt Eckert, Matt Smith and James Hodson.

Wiscasset (0-1) hosts Carrabec on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Football

BATH — In a game moved to Saturday night, Morse fell short in a 26-6 Class C South setback to Gardiner on McMann Field.

Tied 6-6 in the second quarter, Morse’s Parker Onorato intercepted a pass from Gardiner quarterback Cole Heaberlin at the Mo-2. But, a fumble that went out of the endzone gave the Tigers (1-0) a safety and an 8-6 lead.

Gardiner drove to a touchdown on the ensuing drive after the free kick, with Collin Foye darting to paydirt on an 11-yard TD run for a 14-6 lead at the break.

Heaberlin tossed two touchdowns to tight end Patrick Pelletier and finished 6-of-14 for 67 yards. Running backs Cam Michaud (10 carries, 50 yards, TD), Foye (6-48, TD) and Nate Malinowski (12-47) allowed Gardiner to control the ball in the second half.

Morse, 0-1 and scheduled to visit Gray-New Gloucester this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m., received 57 yards passing from QB Corey Larmon, who was 6-of-14 with two interceptions. Austin Baltazar (11 carries, 37 yards) scored the lone Morse touchdown on a 10-yard burst in the second quarter that tied the game, 6-6.
