About 5,606 Berwick-area homes and businesses were without power Sunday morning for several hours.

The power outage was caused by animal contact with a transformer at the Berwick substation, according to the Central Maine Power dispatcher.

The outage occurred at 8:51 a.m. Power was restored by 12:55 p.m.

Most of the customers affected were in Berwick, South Berwick and North Berwick.
