WOOLWICH
Longtime Regional School Unit 1 Chairman Timothy Harkins has resigned from the board to take up a new position with the district as the food services director, Superintendent Patrick Manuel confirmed at Monday’s RSU 1 board meeting.
As an employee of the district, Harkins can no longer serve on the board, Manuel said.
Stephen August, who had been serving as the vice chairman, was elected chairman by the board.
“I will be taking over the responsibilities as the chair until January, when we reorganize.” said August.
Lou Ensel will serve as vice chairman. The Arrowsic Board of Selectmen has appointed Anita Brown to fill Harkins’ place as the representative from the town on the RSU 1 board. Brown will fill out the final months of Harkins’ term in office and has taken out nomination papers to run for the next two-year term.
Nomination papers are available for the Arrowsic seat, as well as the Bath, Phippsburg and Woolwich seats which are for three-year terms. Candidates must be residents of the municipality they seek to represent, and nominations must be submitted by 3 p.m. on Sept. 25.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
