SPRINGVALE — About 1 1/2 years ago, Fred Boyle reached out, looking for help piecing together genealogies of  the old families of Lyman.

Boyle, a retired educator and longtime genealogist, was writing a new book, called “Early Families of Lyman, Maine.”

Now, it is finished. It is Boyle’s ninth book of genealogy.

“I try to start with this census,” he said, in a 2016 interview, pointing to the 1790 census of Maine. “I try to include the families that were here in 1790, and some who came a bit later.”

Eventually, Boyle was able to trace more than 100 families.

Originally called Coxhall, Lyman was first settled by residents of near-by Wells, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, later to be joined by many families from Berwick, and Kittery, Maine and also Dover and Somersworth, New Hampshire, said Boyle in a news release. The early settlers also included Essex County, Massachusetts, people who were connected with the Coxhall Proprietorship.

Among the multi-generational families are Andrews, Clark, Cousens, Davis, Downs, Emmons, Gould, Hill, Roberts and Warren. As with other books in his York County series, the genealogies follow families who remained in Lyman up to those born circa 1900, said Boyle.

For its authenticity, the book relies on vital records copied at the Lyman Town Hall, gravestone inscriptions, York County land and probate records, as well as Congregational Church records, Boyle said.

The last two books in Boyles’ “Early Families series were Early Families of Waterborough, Maine,” published in 2012, and and “Early Families of Alfred, Maine,” published in 2006.

“Early Families of Lyman, Maine” will be available from the publisher, Peter Randall Publishers of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, starting Sept. 23. Book signings will occur that day at both the Lyman Community Library at 10:30 a.m. and the Springvale Public Library at 1 p.m.

Boyle said for information about ordering the book, which will be discounted until Sept. 23, folks should visit his website at: frederickboyle.com or pick up order forms at the Lyman and Springvale libraries.
