Coach convicted
in sex assault dies
of suicide, police say
WESTBROOK – The former Westbrook High School coach charged with having sex with a student has died of an apparent suicide.
According to Maine State Police, Timothy Even, 28, of Stoneham, was found dead in his vehicle by police on Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. The vehicle was located on Route 5 in Lovell near the Stoneham town line and Even is believed to have died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
His death is not suspicious, but the state medical examiner will make the final determination. Stephen McCausland, the public information officer with the Maine State Police, said on Wednesday that there were no updates.
Even was arrested last year, charged with four counts of sexual assault and convicted for having sex with a 17-year-old WHS student while he was employed at the school. He was a full-time educational technician at the school and a class adviser. He was also the head coach for girls cross-country and outdoor track and for both boys and girls winter indoor track.
According to Even’s obituary, visitation hours were held Aug. 23 from 5-8 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg. A celebration of his life was scheduled for Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. at Camp Susan Curtis in Stoneham.
Inmate arrested after
walking off work-release
PORTLAND — A Cumberland County Jail inmate who authorities said walked off his jail work-release job Aug. 22 was arrested about nine hours later in Westbrook.
Larry P. Goodwin, 41, of Seattle, walked away from a job at 158 Fore St. around 9:30 a.m., according to a press release from jail spokesman Wayne Pike. He was apprehended about 6:30 p.m. at an apartment building in Westbrook.
Pike did not disclose the address of the building. He said Goodwin was returned to the jail but did not detail what additional charges he may face.
Goodwin was serving a nine-month sentence for operating with a suspended or revoked license, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, and operating under the influence. He was scheduled to be released in February 2018.
Artwork auction
to benefit ARLGP
THOMASTON — Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will auction off 47 pieces of contemporary Maine art worth an estimated $70,000 on Friday, Aug. 25, to benefit the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
The collection of 47 fine paintings, photographs and prints will go up for auction at 11 a.m. All pieces were recently donated to ARLGP in Westbrook by an anonymous supporter.
As part of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries Gifts for Good Program, the pieces will be auctioned at a reduced commission to maximize support for the ARLGP.
“This donation is life-changing for the League” Patsy Murphy, ARLGP executive director, said in a prepared statement. “We are very grateful for the opportunity to showcase these amazing Maine pieces and to raise much-needed funds for the animals in our care.”

Cummings to host
USM breakfast opener
GORHAM — University of Southern Maine President Glenn Cummings will host the university’s opening fall breakfast at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, in the field house in the Costello Sports Complex on its Gorham campus.
Cummings will discuss the state of the university; George Campbell of the USM Foundation will talk about master planning and the capital campaign; and Vice President Nancy Davis Griffin will discuss current enrollment and retention efforts, according to a press release.
