OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Every summer, hundreds of students from all over the world come to Maine on J-1 student work visas to help fill the demand of seasonal help.

On Monday, Cultural Homestay International, an agency that sponsors J-1 students, hosted an event in appreciation of the young people on the beach behind the The Brunswick hotel.

“Today is J Day, a day to recognize the program for cultural exchange,” said Michelle Riaz, New England region work and travel manager for Cultural Homestay International.

J Day, observed on Aug. 7,  is a nationwide celebration of international exchange, according to information from the Alliance for International Exchange. The observance of J Day began in 2014, by three agencies that sponsor J-1 students — CCI Greenheart, CENET: Cultural Exchange Network, and Spirit Cultural Exchange.

Young people from several different countries gathered on the beach, mingling over the spread of free food donated from area businesses, playing volleyball, and participating in organized games and activities.

“We’re trying to get them to have a little fun and not just work,” said Riaz.

Peiyi Lai, a college student from China pursuing a degree in marketing said she really appreciated the event, as it was a chance to meet new people and have fun. Lai is living in Saco this summer, working at Funtown Splashtown USA as a cashier and at a local hotel.

She said she came to the United States to “broaden my horizons,” practice speaking English and be independent.

Lai said she has enjoyed learning about American culture and since coming to Maine in June, she has become much more confident speaking English.

“I feel very lucky,” she said.
