As summer progresses, I can’t help but notice how quickly the days are rolling past us. In fact, I have found this as a trend in general no matter the season or month.

Does it have something to do with the fact that I am getting older or perhaps because I am too focused on my activities that it moves quickly?

“Time flies when you’re having fun,” is a saying that I have heard frequently growing up. I find this saying to be proven correct about 90 percent of the time.

Why is this?

I believe that when we as humans are doing an activity that is either being too consumed by our attention or amusing, we tend to focus on that one thing instead of the other happenings in our lives, allowing our focus on time to be lost.

I also believe that this is why most people participate in time-consuming activities such as exercise, playing music, or yoga as a way of stress relief to get away from the pesky feeling. Not only does it allow us stress relief, but we may find the activity “fun,” so we are not focused on time like we do often.

Personally, I find that the feeling of time passing by is weird. It feels surreal and brings me a sense of fear.

When I entered high school, I was told that high school passes by very fast. I was also told to make the most of the four years and “be a kid.”

Heading into my junior year of high school, it has dawned upon me the fact that I am going to be an adult in a short amount of time.

To me, that is scary. I am too consumed by jobs, school, and my various activities that I forgot about time. I forgot what age I was. Most important, I am losing the precious minutes of my childhood.

The reason for this is because I wanted to be an adult more than a child. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it has brought to my attention that I take my young age for granted and I should enjoy the years now before it is too late.

With the increased freedom that comes with growing up, why wouldn’t children and teenagers want to become adults more quickly?

As a representative of the young generation, I think that we need to start realizing the power of the sense of time because we are indeed on the verge of adulthood.

Minutes. Hours. Months. Years.

Time is short.

Use it wisely because it doesn’t last forever.
