A Portland man whose car was swerving along Route 1 in Bath was arrested on charges of operating under the influence as well as drug possession, the Sagadahoc County sheriff said Monday.

Sheriff Joel A. Merry identified the driver as 53-year-old John Andretta Jr.

Andretta failed a field sobriety test and a search of his white, four-door Lexus uncovered a stash of crack cocaine and amphetamine drugs, Merry said in a statement.

Sheriff’s deputies received reports around 7 p.m. Friday of a vehicle that was “all over the road” near the Bath and West Bath town line. Deputy Matt Sharpe stopped the Lexus after observing it swerve several times, Merry said.

Cpl. Ian Alexander and his police dog, Brix, searched the vehicle and discovered the drugs. Police confiscated in excess of $3,500 in cash, Merry said.

Andretta was charged with operating under the influence, unlawful possession of crack cocaine and unlawful possession of amphetamine.

He was taken to the Two Bridges Jail in Wiscasset and held on $1,000 cash bail pending his initial court appearance.

The deputies involved in the arrest are members of the Sagadahoc Regional Impaired Driving Enforcement team.
