NEWFIELD —  The 6th of Maine Battery re-enacting group will demonstrate the drills practiced by an artillery battery during the “War of the Rebellion” with an authentic Parrot Rifle (cannon) Saturday and Sunday at the Curran Homestead Village at Newfield, formerly  known as Willowbrook.

The Civil War enactors will be firing the cannon every two hours during the weekend event. There will also be a representation of a sutler’s (merchant’s) tent encampment adjacent to the soldiers with “civilians” in period clothing, according to director Robert Schmick.

The museum, at 70 Elm St.  will have many of the buildings open for public viewing, and there will be scheduled carousel rides each day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Admission includes a carousel ride: $12 adult, $11 seniors, $8 children 7-17. children 6 and younger get in free. 

Schmick said a real letterpress printer will be on hand in the printing shop, a blacksmith, and other interpreters at various sites during the weekend. 

“We will be offering some hands-on activities especially for the children in the family, including secret decoder wheel-making and a medical triage with fake injuries and bandaging,” Schmick said.

 As well, he said Curran Homestead Village at Newfield  will offer fall school field trips this season during the last week of September and the first two weeks of October. The fall programming will include apple cider-making.  This spring, 1,400 schoolchildren  visited.
