WELLS — A Massachusetts man died Tuesday, as a result of injuries he sustained during an accident in Wells, according to Wells Police.

Philip Philbin, 53, of Clinton, Massachusetts, died at about 1:10 p.m.Tuesday, police say.

The accident took place about 7:30 a.m. Monday on Atlantic Avenue. Philbin who was riding a bicycle, collided with a 2011 Land Rover driven by a 17-year-old Wells resident, according to police.

Both Philbin and the driver of the SUV were heading south, Wells Police Lt. Jerry Congdon, Philbin was riding on the side of the road.

Philbin, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained severe head injuries during the collision, police said. He was transported by Lifeflight of Maine to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he died.

Certified accident reconstructionist Warden Eric Blanchard of the Maine Warden Service has been assisting Wells Police in the investigation and was investigating the scene on Thursday.

Congdon said there is video on the accident as it took place in front of a house that has video surveillance. He said the video has been helpful in showing what took place. Blanchard’s investigation involves determining the speed and distance of the bicycle and SUV.

Congdon did not say whether the police department would be pressing charges against the 17-year-old Wells driver.

He said Philbin and his family has been vacationing in the Wells area for more than 20 years.
