GORHAM — A committee will scrutinize a proposal that would allow qualified farmers in rural zones to host special events like weddings.
The Town Council last week unanimously agreed 7-0 to forward the matter to its Ordinance Committee following previous approval from the Planning Board.
The proposal is to amend the town’s Land Use and Development Code to augment farming by allowing limited agricultural special events in rural zones. Language of the measure approved by the Planning Board would require agricultural production of at least $10,000 per year, five acres, and special events limited to 25 per year.
Beef producer Norm Justice of Wood Road initially asked the town to consider allowing special events at farms. Last week, he pointed to neighboring towns that allow farms to host events that seems to be trending.
Justice spoke briefly and said he’d comment after it goes to the Ordinance Committee.
A Mighty Street couple, Charlie and Linda Pearson, objected from the public podium at last week’s Town Council discussion. Charlie Pearson said they have a historic farm property and chose Gorham to live because of its rural character.
Pearson said the $10,000 requirement is too small and questioned whether it’s gross sales or income. He’s advocating an increase to $25,000 and also wants the lot size increased.
He asked town councilors whether they are trying to promote hobby farmers or real farmers.
Linda Pearson read a letter and asked the Town Council to deny the matter. “The proposal is too broad,” she said.
She advocated that the number of events allowed annually be reduced to six. She added that 25 events would be a burden to a neighborhood.
