Democrat Jonathan Fulford of Monroe has announced he will challenge Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin for Maine’s 2nd District seat in the 2018 election.

Fulford last ran for elected office in 2016, when he was narrowly defeated by incumbent state Sen. Mike Thibodeau, R-Winterport, who is now Senate president.

“I am running for Congress because it is time for an economy that works for everyone,” Fulford said in a prepared statement issued Wednesday.

“It is time for government to invest in the well-being of its citizens and build a fair and prosperous economy with jobs that pay enough to live on. We need more freedom and more opportunity to support ourselves, raise our families, and live together in peace and prosperity in our communities.”

He is the second Democrat to announce his candidacy for the 2nd District seat. Tim Rich, who owns a restaurant in Bar Harbor, filed paperwork to enter the race this month.

Fulford launched his campaign with a luncheon in Houlton and has appeared in parades and at other events.
