BIDDEFORD — Normand W. Audie, 90, of Biddeford, passed away Saturday afternoon on July 8, 2017, at Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Biddeford on Oct. 30, 1926, one of twins, of William J. and Marie A. (Larouche) Audie. He was drafted out of high school his senior year during World War II.

He served in the Signal Corps, the 25th Company of the 25th Infantry of the United States Army. On his way to Japan, the atomic bomb was released. He was part of the occupation army stationed in Osaka, Japan. He returned to St. Louis High School after an honorable discharge.

On Sept. 15, 1951, Normand married Jessie McGee of Saco. They were married 62 years until her passing in 2014.

Normand and Jessie owned and operated Audies Cabins in Old Orchard Beach for 42 years. Normand also was employed by Saco Tannery for 20 years and by Pratt & Whitney for 12 years, retiring in 1992.

His greatest love was simple, family and friends were foremost. He enjoyed fishing, with his grandchildren, friends and especially Paul Salvas. He also refinished furniture, always admiring the beauty of the wood of his finished product. During retirement, he worked part time at the Old Orchard Beach Public Library, where his love of books and reading only grew.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Jessie, on Jan. 17, 2014, his grandson, Normand, his sister Jeannine, and his twin brother Fernand and his brother Richard.

He is survived by: four children, Stephen P. Audie and his wife, Kathleen, of Biddeford, Bruce N. Audie and his wife, Karen, of Saco, Kimberley A. Hirsch and her husband, Joseph, of Lyman, and Lori J. Buhelt and her husband, William, of Waterboro. He is also survived by his grandchildren Katie Cote and her husband, Matthew, Matthew Hirsch, Nathan Hirsch, Bradley Buhelt and his wife Victoria and Lauren Buhelt; great-grandchildren Evan, Tiffany, Beckett and Cadain, one brother William; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough for all their care, compassion and support during the past year and a half.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, 87 James St., Saco. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 14, 2017, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with Military Honors will be held at a later date in Maine Veteran’s Cemetery in Springvale.
