BIDDEFORD — Summer, also known as “Construction Season,” is in full swing in Biddeford.

Construction continues on Main Street, as crews work to install stone crosswalks and cobblestone “bump outs” on the recently-paved roadway. Paving is completed on Main Street, Public Works Director Guy Casavant said Tuesday, and the remainder of the work should be completed within the next two or three weeks.

“The paving is all completed for this season down there and there’s a crew that is installing the stone crosswalks and cobblestone bump out areas,” Casavant said. “When they get done that’s going to be about it for this season in the downtown proper.”

But that’s just one of many projects in the Public Works department’s “aggressive” paving schedule this season.

A number of residential streets, including Clarendon Street and Dupont Avenue, have been paved, and there’s more to come, Casavant said.

Mile Stretch Road and Taylor Street are awaiting final improvements. Ocean Avenue will be repaved in the fall, 5th Street is slated to be paved and West Street toward Westwood Drive will see “major” drainage and paving work this year, he added.

Of course, Casavant said, all projects are dependent on weather.

Also on the map is a major construction project on Lincoln Street, at intersection of Main and
Adams streets, Casavant said. That project will entail completion of stone work at the intersection, as well as the construction of new sidewalks and a retaining wall along Lincoln Street. The road will also be repaved following electrical improvements.

It will be “like a complete facelift,” Casavant said.

Biddeford Mayor Alan Casavant said in an email Monday he’s satisfied with the changes to the city’s downtown area.

“Downtowns are the most visible part of any community, and, as I have said many times, they define, in many ways, the city or town,” he said. “It is important that we continue to invest in ourselves by investing in our infrastructure, something that has been neglected for a long time.”
