AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine’s Democratic attorney general says she’ll run next year to succeed a Republican governor with whom she has often clashed.
Janet Mills announced her 2018 gubernatorial Monday run in a statement.
Mills said it’s clear that government is broken and that “there’s no way” she’ll stand on the sidelines.
She’s the state’s first female attorney general and a former district attorney and Democratic lawmaker. She’d be the state’s first woman governor.
Gov. Paul LePage sued Mills this year in state superior court for alleged abuse of power.
Mills has said the lawsuit is without merit and has asked for it to be dismissed.
Other announced candidates in the race include LePage’s former health and human services commissioner Republican Mary Mayhew.
