A woman was transported to the hospital as a precaution after being nearly struck by lightning Friday afternoon during a severe thunderstorm in Raymond.

A dispatcher in the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the initial call came in at 4:26 p.m. about a female hit by lighting. However, Fire Chief Bruce Tupper said the woman was actually 20 to 40 feet from the strike on Cape Road.

She did not have any life-threatening injuries and appeared to be in good condition, he said. She was transported to Maine Medical Center as a precaution because a nearby lightning strike can disrupt a person’s heart rhythms. The woman’s identity was not released.

“Lucky for sure,” Tupper said.

The National Weather Service office in Gray also received several reports of trees and wires down in the Sebago Lakes region, including fallen trees on a vehicle and a building in Casco. The first storm warning went out around 3:40 p.m. and the last went out at 4:25 p.m., but the storm had mostly passed by 5:30 p.m.

“It’s petered out,” meteorologist James Brown said.
