THE GEORGE T. FILES POST 20 of the Brunswick American Legion and Boy Scout troops 633 and 646, conducted an annual flag retirement ceremony Saturday at the Joshua Chamberlain statue in Brunswick. Post Commander Joe Donahue was assisted by Scouts folding and preparing flags for inspection. “We have been presented these flags of our country which have been inspected and judged to be unserviceable, and no longer a fitting symbol of our country. Let us retire these flags with the honor, respect, and dignity they deserve,” Donahue stated at the ceremony. According to the Boy Scout handbook, “A national flag that is worn beyond repair may be burned in a fire. The ceremony should be conducted with dignity and respect and the flag burned completely to ashes.” District 8 Commander Denial Lindsley was the acting Chaplain for the ceremony.
