ORONO — Drew Powell, a member at the host course of Penobscot Valley, led all players with a round of 70 to earn medalist honors at the final qualifying tournament for the 2017 Maine Amateur Championship.

Powell had an exciting round that featured five birdies, an eagle and two double-bogeys. In the end it was enough to finish as the low player for the day.

Finishing two shots back in second place was Powell’s fellow club member

Len Cole, who carded an even-par 72.

This was the third and final qualifier for the 2017 Maine Amateur Championship, which will be contested July 11- 13 at Brunswick Golf Club. Biddeford Saco Country Club and Poland Spring GC hosted the other two qualifiers in the last week to determine the field for the 98th playing of the Amateur.

The cut at Penobscot Valley fell at 82, with Joe Messerman of Brunswick earning the final spot on a match of cards.

The 132- player field is now set for Brunswick, with the 82 qualifiers from the three sites joining the 50 exempt players at the championship.
