The Portland Sea Dogs pounded four home runs, including one from new guy Michael Chavis, as they beat the Harrisburg Senators 9-2 on Friday night at Hadlock Field.
Chavis made his Double-A debut by hitting a home run to lead off the second inning. Tzu-Wei Lin, Jeremy Barfield and Jake Romanski also homered.
Shortstop Chad De La Guerra, also making his Double-A debut, enjoyed a 3-for-4 night with an RBI single.
Kevin McAvoy (2-5) picked up the win with six innings of four-hit ball. He allowed two runs, both unearned.
“He threw anything at any time for a strike,” said Romanski, the catcher. “We focused today on really getting that curveball working. It’s a great pitch.”
Chavis, the designated hitter, hit the first pitch he saw from Kyle McGowin (0-2) over the left-field wall.
“Fastball up and in,” Chavis said. “It worked out pretty well.”
Doubles by Mike Olt and Josh Tobias brought in another run.
After Harrisburg tied it, Lin led off the third with a homer to right field, his fifth. RBI singles by De La Guerra and Romanski made it 5-2.
In the fifth, Barfield and Romanski connected, and it was 8-2. “I had a feeling he was going (inside) and I put a good swing on it,” Romanski said.
Lin tripled in the sixth and scored on a wild throw to third base.
Reliever Bobby Poyner pitched the ninth (two strikeouts, one walk), lowering his ERA to 0.73.
NOTES: Lin, normally an infielder, played center field, a position he’s likely to play more after De La Guerra’s arrival. … Backup catcher Jake DePew was released. … The Sea Dogs improved to 32-36 while the Senators dropped to 30-41.
