The driver of a pickup truck that crashed into a tree along Interstate 295 northbound in Bowdoinham Saturday afternoon was airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what appeared to be serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver was initially pinned in the pickup truck. It took firefighters 30 minutes to cut him out in what Bowdoinham Deputy Fire Chief Bob Frizzle said was an extensive extrication.
Richmond Fire Department coordinated a landing zone and a helicopter and crew with LifeFlight of Maine landed on I-295 near the scene and transported the driver.
The passenger did not have life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a hospital.
The crash was approximately two miles beyond exit 38 northbound in Bowdoinham. I-295 was shut down at the crash scene, backing up traffic.
Frizzle said a state trooper on scene said the crash apparently happened after a front tire on the pickup truck blew.
Firefighters responded from Bowdoinham, Topsham, Richmond and Bowdoin.
Maine State Police have not returned a phone call seeking additional information.
