TOPSHAM
A Durham man was seriously injured in a crash on Route 196 near the River Road intersection Wednesday night.
The crash was reported just before 7 p.m. and the road was closed down for approximately three hours, with traffic detoured down Meadow Cross Road.
According to Topsham Police Sgt. Mark Gilliam, 62-year-old Philip Gilikson was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle west on Route 196.
The Harley collided with a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Charles Mountainland, 51, of Topsham that was turning from River Road westbound onto Route 196, Gilliam said. Gilikson was not wearing a helmet.
According to Topsham Fire Lt. Tom St. Pierre, when rescue personnel arrived, Gilikson was on the ground unresponsive. He was transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon.
Mountainland was not injured.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Gilliam said. Deputy Brian Carlton with the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department and Brunswick Police Cmdr. Tom Garrepy are reconstructing the crash.
