The Rams fired on all cylinders in the lopsided match, getting a heavy offensive attack while also demonstrating stout defense and strong goaltending.
After a 1-1 start this spring, the Rams seem to have hit their stride by winning their last five contests.
“Everyone is continuing to grow — we’re beginning to add more things every game and we just keep on building,” said Kennebunk coach Annie Barker.
The Rams scored early and often, maintaining a firm grasp throughout the majority of the 50-minute affair. Kennebunk would get nine goals from five players in an 11-minute span in the first half to take the 9-0 lead at the break, followed by five more goals in the second to secure the shutout.
Erin Gorton led Kennebunk with six goals, while Hallie Schwartzman added four more. Katherine Koch netted a pair of goals, while Leah Dumas and Anna York recorded one apiece.
Barker was pleased with her team’s well-rounded performance, and felt that all three phases contributed to the shutout. She has also been impressed with the number of Rams that have emerged as scoring threats to bolster the Kennebunk attack.
“It was a little bit of both — our defense is pretty tough to get through. Hopefully we are almost balanced now, our attackers are now used to working with each other, people have stepped up to the plate and you see that we have so many people that can go to the goal for us,” said Barker.
The defending state champions enter the back nine of the regular season, and feel that they will be prepared for the postseason despite the roster turnover since last year’s title run.
“I definitely think (we’re ready), especially in practice we are playing more as a team than we were at the beginning,” said Gorton. “It helps that we’ve been working together for so long and have been playing together for so many years. It’s coming all together now … we’re working hard and it we’ll get even better.”
“I think they are ready,” added Barker. “We have a big week coming up next week but I think mentally they’re ready, physically they’re ready, we’ve talked about having a smart game and I think the package is going to be there.”
