The world’s favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May. Edwin Way Teal

May is quietly tiptoeing down our streets warming our days as spring’s promise is finally fulfilled. Let’s immerse ourselves in the moment, at the power and magnificence of nature as the clouds float across the sky. We feel the coolness of the breeze as we gaze and admire the beauty, color, and form of the new flowers. We wonder at the bulb’s ability to live and grow from under winter’s freeze. Their life begins in the womb of the earth.

You just have to ride around our town to experience how faithfully springtime lays a magic hand across the land. You cannot miss the dazzling yellow forsythia bushes. The soft, blue skies of May spread the news that the season is here. The bright yellow, golden daffodils and fragrant hyacinths awaken to reach the sunlight of God’s day. There is a quickening of spirit as we see all the beauty. Breathe deeply and hold the wonders of each season in your heart. A promise to gardeners of a plot filled with greenery, annuals and perennials. As the earth has changed seasons again, no month is as reassuring as May.

May also brings us Armed Forces Day on May 20 and Memorial Day on May 29. On this Memorial Day let’s wish for all of us and the world, the radiant hope that we can claim peace-no more wars. War leaves a secret signature on each soul. This holiday is a heartfelt tribute to the courage of our fighting men. Memorial Day is a day on which we celebrate peace and remember those who have died in wars and family members.

The endless quite of the grave creates strong emotional feelings in us. We feel a mournful farewell and are grief stricken. We can’t make sense of suffering. We try to make sense of life. Dreams fade into anguished memory.

Veterans share a powerful sense of duty. We must never forget the men and women who fought, and still do, to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. These are times to set aside to thank, acknowledge and honor all who serve and have served, sacrificed and performed their duty to contribute to America’s security. They keep America in their care and make us a shining symbol of all that is good and great.

May celebrates many days. May is the fifth month of the year, but is not a dull month. There are many interesting events for all ages in our community that lead to a wonderful sense of joy. For one, the ladies of the Southern Maine Health Care Auxiliary have the power of an independent imagination that understand to continue the process of life. Their eyes are open to the seriousness of the times and their desire to do something about it. They commit resources of talent and intelligence to the future to make it all it can be.
