SACO/OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Spring is finally here and that means it’s time for spring cleaning. On Saturday there are two local volunteer opportunities that give do-gooders a chance to help clean up a local watershed area or a local ballpark.

Saco Bay Rotary is hosting a day of service to help spiff up The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. — rain date is May 13 — and the public is invited.

The Ballpark is a town-owned facility, which hosts baseball and a number of other community events, including an upcoming weekly farmers’ market.

Ballpark Operations Manager Guy Fontaine said at Tuesday night’s Old Orchard Beach Town Council meeting the rotary sponsors the event, and community volunteers are needed as well. Coffee and refreshments will be provided.

“We have a lot of things that need to be done at The Ballpark to help fix it up,” he said. He said there are both small and large tasks available, and he urged community members to come help out, even if they could only donate an hour of their time.

Tasks include painting, repairing broken seats, cleaning equipment and helping to complete a deck and stairs.

“There’s something for everyone,” said Fontaine.

The Goosefare Brook Restoration Committee, an ad hoc committee formed as part of the Goosefare Watershed Management Plan, is hosting a clean-up day on Saturday to remove trash in three “at risk” tributaries of the river.

The Goosefare Brook watershed covers about 4,480 acres in Saco and 1,792 acres in Old Orchard Beach, according to the Mane Department of Environmental Protection.

Those interested in helping to clean up the watershed can volunteer in either Old Orchard Beach or Saco. Volunteers will be gathering at the Saco Community Garden at 41 King St. in Saco and Old Orchard Beach High School at 9 a.m. and working until 11 a.m.

“Be prepared to get wet. Bring gloves and some waterproof boots,” said Saco Conservation Commission Mmember Lynn Copeland at the Saco City Council meeting Monday night.
