SACO — Jared Brooks pitched a 10-strikeout three-hitter, Dominic Casale singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and Cheverus topped Thornton Academy 3-2 on Wednesday in Class A South baseball game, improving to 4-0.

Logan McCarthy led off the Cheverus sixth with a double, then scored on Casale’s base hit.

The Golden Trojans (2-3) had tied the game in the fifth on Luke Chessie’s two-run single.

Jack Casale singled and scored for a 1-0 Stags lead in the first. Cheverus upped the lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Griffin Watson scored on a double play.

FALMOUTH 14, FREEPORT 0: The Yachtsmen (6-0) scored 10 runs in the second inning and cruised to a five-inning victory over the Falcons (2-3) in Freeport.

William Blum led Falmouth with three hits, and Reece Armitage hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Colby Wagner led Freeport with two hits, including a double.

Griffin Aube (1-0) got the win, allowing three hits with four strikeouts in four innings. He added two hits at the plate.

GREELY 4, YARMOUTH 1: Ryan Twitchell pitched a five-hitter, striking out 12 and walking one, as the Rangers (5-1) defeated the Clippers (3-2) at Cumberland.

Greely took the lead on an RBI double from Luke Miller in the fourth inning and sealed the game on a two-out, two-run double from Will Neleski in the fifth.

WESTBROOK 8, WINDHAM 3: Bailey Sawyer and Dylan Francoeur each hit an RBI double during a four-run first inning, and the Blue Blazes (4-1) went on to defeat the Eagles (2-3) in Westbrook.

Francoeur led Windham with three hits and three RBI. Kyle Champagne (1-0) got the win, allowing 11 hits and one walk with two strikeouts in seven innings. He added two doubles at the plate.

Tim Greenlaw had four hits for Windham, including a two-run homer in the fifth.

PORTLAND 9, BONNY EAGLE 4: Jake Knop lined a two-run single and later scored during a six-run second inning that carried the Bulldogs (3-2) past Bonny Eagle (2-3) in Portland.

The rally gave Portland a 7-3 lead.

Gio Ruotolo had two of the Bulldogs’ nine hits, while Brady Grass had a pair of hits for the Scots.

KENNEBUNK 4, POLAND 0: The Rams (2-5) grabbed a first-inning lead on Matt Smith’s RBI single and a bases-loaded walk and shut out the Knights (2-5) at Kennebunk.

Smith added another RBI single in the fifth inning, while Bryan Hickey added three singles. Justin Wiggins went the distance for the Rams, allowing four hits while fanning six and walking two.

Brady Downing had two hits for Poland. Caleb Hodgkin added a double.

LAKE REGION 3, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 1: The Lakers (2-4) had four consecutive hits on their way to a three-run second inning and outlasted the Patriots (3-3) at Gray.

With one out in the second, Mark Mayo singled and Cormic Lambert doubled. Matt Casey then hit a run-scoring single and Luke Porter followed with an RBI single. Tristen Chaine added an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Gray-New Gloucester got its run in the bottom half of the second when Elijah Winchester scored on the front half of a double steal.

SANFORD 11, NOBLE 6: Frankie Veino broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run double and Josiah Scott followed with a three-run home run as Sanford (2-4) broke away from the Knights (1-3) in the sixth inning at North Berwick.

OCEANSIDE 10, LEAVITT 1: The Mariners (4-1) scored eight unearned runs in the seventh inning to pull away from the Hornets (2-1) at Turner.

Jack Wadsworth paced Oceanside with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Coby Dorr added two.

Ian Godfrey and Tim Albert each had two hits for Leavitt.

Logan Sheridan went five innings for the win for the Mariners, allowing one earned run on five hits, fanning four and walking three, Jack Freeman picked up his first save on the season, throwing two scoreless innings.

TRAIP ACADEMY 10, WAYNFLETE 0: Hunter Sawtelle struck out seven and allowed only one hit in four innings as Traip (4-1) defeated Waynflete (0-3) in a six-inning game at Kittery.

Trevor Salema had four singles and knocked in two runs for the Rangers. Henry Miller added a pair of doubles, driving home a run and scoring another, while Shane McNeill singled twice and scored twice.

Tyler Apodaca also had two hits, including the game-ending RBI single in the sixth.

GORHAM 15, SCARBORUGH 5: Jason Komulainen had four hits, Nolan Brown had three and Logan Drouin struck out 10 as the Rams (4-1) defeated Scarborough (3-2) in six innings at Gorham.

Brown and Komulainen each hit a key triple as Gorham rallied from a 5-2 deficit with a six-run third inning. Drouin drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run. Brown followed with a three-run triple and Komulainen had a two-run triple.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 14, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 4: The Seagulls (2-1) sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning as they opened a 12-0 lead and cruised past the Panthers (2-3) at Old Orchard Beach.

Jacob Maloney went 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs for Old Orchard, while Joe McCullum added a two hits and drove in three runs.

Chandler Waldron and Dana Nichols each had an RBI single for NYA, which scored four runs in the fourth inning.

MARSHWOOD 11, BIDDEFORD 3: Quinn McDaniel, Cole McDaniel and Nate Curtis each had an RBI single as the Hawks (1-3) overcame a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the third in a win over Biddeford (1-3) at South Berwick.

ERSKINE ACADEMY 6, MARANACOOK 0: Nick Turcotte hit a bases-loaded double to break open a close game and Erskine (4-0) went on to beat Maranacook (1-3) at South China.

GREELY 14, WAYNFLETE 6: Schuyler Wetmore had three goals and four assists as the Rangers (1-2) beat the Flyers (1-3) at Portland.

Andrew Lawrence and Ben Kennedy also scored three times for Greely, which led 8-3 at the half. Grady Wood recorded 15 saves.

Hank Duvall scored twice for Waynflete.

FOOTBALL

TRAIP ACADEMY: Traip hired Ed McDonough as its head coach Tuesday night, replacing Ron Ross, who stepped down in February after 15 seasons.

McDonough, the finance director for the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District, coached at Wells High for 13 years, leading the Warriors to a Class B state championship in 1997, his final season as coach. He also took Wells to state title games in 1987, 1992 and 1993.

He takes over a program that is dropping to the MPA’s new developmental division, Class E.
