In the teams‘ last meeting, runs for each side were tough to come by, with Wells winning 3-2. This time however — in the cold, wet climate — the bats were hot.
Kennebunk (2-4) kicked off the scoring with a triple and score on a wild pitch from Britney Gregoire — who would later notch the Rams’ second run with a long homer to left center in the second.
Wells (4-0) answered though, with a two-run single in the top of the fourth, followed by another run on a hit single and a score on a wild pitch.
After the onslaught of hits in the top of the inning, the Rams answered back with four runs of their own, with a single and two doubles. Taking the lead 7-4.
But from that point on the Warriors continued to chip away at the score, with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. With the score 7-7 in the seventh inning, Wells took the lead with two runs off wild pitches, a sacrifice ground out and a three run shot to right field by Wells shortstop Anya Chase, who would also come in to relieve Karissa Kenyon.
Both teams used multiple pitchers, but the Warriors did a better job of keeping batters missing, and making big plays in the field.
The win was the Warrior’s best offensive showing this season and keeps the squad undefeated.
Wells coach Kevin Fox stated after the game that despite the high score he was pleased with the determination to come back and win.
“I was just telling them, ‘I don’t like that we gave up a big inning, but I liked the way we reacted to it,’” said Fox. “We gave up a big inning, made a couple of mistakes, they hit the ball well, they hit our pitcher well… . But sure enough, they dig in and we have our big inning and get the (win.)”
Kennebunk’s Coach Kourtney Nadeau also expressed her satisfaction with her team’s play in the loss.
“That’s a 3-2 game to me,” Nadeau said. “Defensively we were tight and we hit the ball. It was a back and forth game like every game we’ve had this season.
I think everything was working well, that’s what I told them,” added Nadeau. “They went up and scored a bunch of runs off Anya, who’s one of the best in the league. It was a good game.”
