Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority plans to renovate Hangar 4 and construct associated office space to attract a tenant to the 50,000-square-foot building.

At the Brunswick Staff Review Committee meeting on April 26, Suzanne Sheppard, project manager of Hoyle, Tanner & Associates, and a representative for MRRA, received approval for a minor development application to demolish an existing building to construct new office space at 74 Orion St.

According to the application, renovating the existing two-story office space is not cost effective, so the plan calls for its demolition and the construction of a smaller, one-story office and storage space on its existing footprint.

The project is expected to cost $2.6 million, and construction is anticipated to begin in June and continuing through March 2018. Ninety percent of the work will be funded by a grant awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration, and the remaining cost will be split by the state and MRRA.

Built in 1982, Hangar 4 is now unoccupied and the work will get the building into shape for a potential tenant, including mechanical and aesthetic improvements, such as floor repairs and fire wall upgrades.

The authority hopes an aviation business will rent the building and use the hangar for aircraft. The hangar has been previously used as a maintenance space, an airframe shop and an aviation armament shop, according to MRRA’s website.

Anna Breinich, Brunswick’s director of planning and development, said the plan should be submitted to the Navy soon.
