GORHAM — The Little East Conference today announced that two members of the University of Southern Maine men’s outdoor track and field team, sophomores Jared Marshall (Gloucester, Mass.) and Drew Gamage (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill), have been selected for weekly honors in recognition of their performances at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference/MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past Saturday (April 29).
For the second straight week, Marshall was selected as the Track Athlete of the Week. Gamage was named the Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. Both played instrumental roles in the Huskies winning the LEC team title and finishing runner-up in the Alliance scoring.
Marshall was the LEC and Alliance champion in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.93 seconds, and ran the second leg of Huskies’ LEC winning 4 x 400-meter relay (3:22.77). Marshall also was third in the LEC 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.63, and was part of the school record 4 x 100-meter relay (41.99) that finished second in the LEC and Alliance scoring.
Gamage won the Alliance and LEC titles in the triple jump with a career-best mark of 14.50 meters (47-7), and moved up to 12th nationally (3rd in NE) on the latest Division III performance list. Gamage was also the LEC runner-up in the high jump clearing 1.88 meters (6-2), and 4th in the long jump with a leap of 6.31 meters (20-8 ½).
Led by Marshall and Gamage, the Huskies won their third straight LEC title, and seventh in the last 10 years, scoring 185 points to top the list of seven competing teams. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth edged the University of Massachusetts Boston for the runner-up spot, 118.50-107. Rhode Island College took fourth with 73 points.
In the 12-team Alliance scoring which combines all competing schools from the LEC and the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), the Huskies were runner-up to Worcester State University, 149-125. Bridgewater State University was third with 110 points, followed by Westfield State University with 95 and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 82.
