BIDDEFORD — The city of Biddeford kicked off its 2017 Little League season this Saturday, and the community looks forward to hitting the diamond this upcoming spring.

Players, coaches, board members and family poured into the fields at Hill Street and May Street to take part in the celebration. Other guests included Biddeford Mayor Alan Casavant, as well as Biddeford’s Tiger mascot who delivered the ceremonial first pitch at Hill Street.

Other attendees were members of last year’s 11-12 year old all-star team, that was the District 4 champion and state runner up last summer. Members of the club raised their District champions flag in center field for fans to see.

Despite the tough weather this spring, the Biddeford Little League board and its volunteers were able to work hard and have the fields prepared for opening day, and were pleased with the show that was put on this past weekend.

“Opening day went great — we were worried about the condition of the fields and we were worried about the weather but it turned out to be an awesome day,” said Biddeford Little League President Dan Michaud. “Everything else went well, we had a great turnout, the teams were all well-represented and there were plenty of spectators there too.”

Players and coaches are excited to finally play some games, and are anxious to see what teams may be poised to capture a city title this spring.

“It really was a long spring, we had the late snowstorms and the rain kept us off the fields. It was nice to finally get out there and play,” said Michaud. “Everyone is ready to go, everyone is anxious to get out there and see what they’ve got, everyone was excited.”

More importantly, the community is ready to enjoy its youth have fun while learning the ropes of the sport. Michaud and company are hopeful to provide the kids with a strong program, while also giving them a fun environment to compete and spend time with friends.”

“Our goal as a board is always the same — we want to put on the best Little League program that we can and to offer the kids the best opportunities to do well and have fun that we can,” said Michaud. “We have some good volunteers that work hard, every year we want to put the most into it that we can so the kids can get the most out of it.”
