DAVENPORT, Fla.

The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team netted its first win of the 2017 season with a 17-7 victory over Hamilton on Saturday.

The Polar Bears moved to 1-2 (1-1 New England Small College Athletic Conference), while the Continentals fell to 2-3 (1-2 NESCAC).

Bowdoin got off to a solid start, jumping to a 5-2 lead after one quarter of play thanks to a pair of goals from Jeff Powers. Bowdoin extended its advantage to 9-3 at halftime as Matthew Crowell scored three times in the second period.

The Polar Bears put the game away with seven goals in the third quarter. Powers scored twice more and Jimmy Young added two as Bowdoin carried a 16-4 lead into the final period of play.

Sam Carlin was outstanding on face-off duties against Hamilton, winning 18-of-22 draws to control the pace of play for the Polar Bears. Powers and Crowell each had four goals in the victory, while Young added three goals and three assists for Bowdoin.

Peter Mumford was credited with 10 saves over the first three quarters before giving way to John Young, who made two saves overall.

Baseball

Hamilton earned a pair of non-conference victories over Bowdoin in Auburndale, Fla., on Monday.

The Polar Bears fell to 4-6 after the 3-0 and 6-0 setbacks.

In the opener, Hamilton scored in the second on a Robert Morris RBI single, and the Continentals added a pair of runs in the fourth.

Dan DePaoli tossed a complete game, with 10 strikeouts and just four hits allowed.

Max Vogel-Freedman took the loss despite pitching six solid innings on seven hits and five punch-outs.

Hamilton used a five-run fifth inning to take control in the nightcap.

Richard Arms took the loss for Bowdoin, going 2.1 innings on five hits and five runs.

On Saturday, the Polar Bears split a doubleheader with Babson, winning the opener, 7-3, and dropping a 6- 2 decision in the second.

In the first game, Cody Todesco evened the game for Bowdoin with an RBI single in the third. Todesco put the Polar Bears ahead with a single, and Brandon Lopez hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Evann Dumont- LaPointe drove in two more runs with a double in the sixth.

Bowdoin fell behind early in the second game as the Beavers put a run on the board in the first two frames.

Bowdoin takes on Wisconsin Oshkosh on Wednesday.

Women’s tennis

Bowdoin closed out its California schedule with an 8-1 win over Wisconsin- Whitewater on Monday morning.

The third-ranked Polar Bears rebounded from their first setback of the season to improve to 7-1. The Warhawks suffered just their second loss, falling to 11-2.

Bowdoin took a 2-1 lead following doubles play. The Polar Bears earned points at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles in dominant fashion. Joulia Likhanskaia and Samantha Stalder captured an 8-3 win at the top, while Tess Trinka and Pilar Giffenig combined for an 8-1 victory at No. 2.

The Polar Bears swept singles play. Likhanskaia knocked off Megan Humphreys, currently ranked fifth in the country for singles, in straight sets (7-6, 6-4). Stalder did not drop a game at No. 2, and Sasa Jovanovic put together 6-1, 6- 1 results at No. 6. Trinka earned the win at No. 3 (6-3, 6-0) and Tasha Christ also won in straight sets (6-0, 7-5). Giffenig won her match in a third-set tiebreaker with a 13-11 edge (6-2, 4-6, 1-0).

Bowdoin returns to the East Coast and hosts both Colby and Bates on April 2, beginning at 10 a.m.

Men’s tennis

Bowdoin rolled to a 9-0 win over Denison on Friday in California.

The third-ranked Polar Bears improved to 6-1 with the victory.

Bowdoin took a trio of doubles wins, losing just 10 games in three matches. Luke Tercek/Grant Urken (8-3), Jerry Jiang/Kyle Wolfe (8-5) and Justin Patel/Gil Roddy (8-2) recorded the victories. The Polar Bears are 9- 0 in doubles play over their last three matches and 19-2 so far in doubles action this spring.

The Polar Bears then earned straight-set wins in all six singles matches. Bowdoin was dominant at positions 4-6, as Jiang (6-2, 6-0), Roddy (6-0, 6-0) and Luke Carstens (6-0, 6-1) helped seal the win.

Bowdoin’s next match against Redlands has been moved up to today due to the expectation of poor weather for the originally scheduled Wednesday date.
