SANFORD — Literacy Volunteers of Greater Sanford has been awarded a one-year grant from United Way of York County for $15,500. This investment will support building adult literacy in the community.
The mission of LVGS is supporting the literacy needs of adults with free one-on-one tutoring by trained adult volunteers.
Whether the goal is to fill out a job application, learn to use a computer, read a label on a prescription bottle or study for a high school equivalency test, LVGS offers opportunities for adult learners to improve their literacy skills and achieve their goals relating to family, career, and participation in civic affairs, said director Ingrid Baily.
This year the United Way is investing in 56 community programs that serve children, youth, adults, and families.
“Thanks to the generosity of many who support United Way’s work throughout the year, we are able to provide continued and much needed support for essential human services across the region,” noted United Way of York County President and CEO Barb Wentworth.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way.
