The Maine State Police say two drivers were seriously injured after their vehicles crashed head-on Sunday evening on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the crash was caused by one of the drivers going southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 150.

Units from the state police, Pittsfield Police Department, and the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office tried to divert the driver of a white truck that was headed the wrong way but did not arrive in time.

The truck’s driver was identified as Hugh Brawn, 70, of Clinton. Brawn’s truck hit a car driven by Tristan Kaldenberg, 19, of Littleton, Massachusetts.

Brawn was transported by Delta Ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with life-threatening injuries. Kaldenberg was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to EMMC, also with life-threatening injuries, McCausland said.

Kaldenberg was still listed in critical condition at the hospital by about 10 a.m. Monday, according to the hospital’s media relations office.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said Monday morning there is no information available on Brawn.

McCausland said Monday morning he did not yet have additional information about the case.
