Cigarette likely cause
of fatal fire in Bridgton
BRIDGTON – Smoking is the suspected cause of an apartment fire that killed 73-year-old Randall Harmon last Friday night at the Pikes Farms apartment complex.
Firefighters were called to Harmon’s second floor apartment in Bridgton around 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, and found Harmon’s body on the floor, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office believe that his clothing caught fire after falling asleep in a chair with a cigarette.
Authorities say that the other seven apartment units in the complex located at 116 High Street were alerted by smoke detectors and were evacuated without injury. Only Harmon’s apartment was damaged in the fire.

Loon Echo to lead
snowshoe hike
BRIDGTON — Loon Echo Land Trust is leading a free late-winter snowshoe hike at Pleasant Mountain in Denmark on Saturday, March 11, at 9:00AM. The planned 3-mile route will start at the Bald Peak trailhead, ascend 1,900 feet to Big Bald Summit, venture over the North Ridge Trail to North Peak and then down Sue’s Way Trail back to the Bald Peak parking area.
Hikers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Bald Peak parking lot on Mountain Road, one mile from the junction with Route 302 in Bridgton. Bring your camera, water and snacks and, if needed, trekking poles. Traction and proper non-cotton clothing are required for this strenuous-level hike of approximately five hours. Register at 647-4352 or email stewardship@lelt.org.
St. Joe’s offers classes
for new swimmers
STANDISH ? St. Joseph’s College Aquatics Department is offering Learn-to-Swim classes on Tuesday evenings starting March 14 and on Saturday mornings beginning March 19.
On Tuesdays, through April 11, parent/child and preschool classes will be held from 5-5:30 p.m. for $70, and Level 1 through Level 5 classes will be held from 5:45-6:30 p.m. for $85.
On Saturdays, through April 22 (no classes on April 16), parent/child and preschool classes will be held from 9-9:30 a.m. and the leveled classes from 9:45-10:30 a.m.

WINDHAM — The Windham High School version of “The Price is Right” game show, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 24, will benefit Project Graduation.
The family-friendly evening will include games, prizes, showcases, food and raffles. Tickets for $10 for adults and $5 for children, can be purchased at the high school office and the Sebago Lakes Chamber of Commerce or at the door.
The event will be held at the Windham Performing Arts Center at the high school.
